Hi, my name is James Edwards-Kenion. I am currently completing on my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Dayton and I will be under supervision here at Riverscape Counseling. I primarily approach counseling from a person-centered, strengths-based approach and enjoy existential therapy. My intern history has given me experience working with a wide range of diagnoses across the lifespan, including young children and individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. I’ve helped clients navigate through past and current traumas and tend to engage with my clients from a humanistic perspective, regardless of the diagnosis or trauma history. My passion points tend to be children, women (mothers specifically), individuals with developmental disabilities, and BIPOC populations, but I enjoy diversity within my client’s diagnoses and age ranges.
In addition to the soon completion of my masters from the University of Dayton, I also hold Bachelors (2014) and Masters (2016) of the Arts in Bassoon Performance from the Wright State University’s School of Music and have been playing the piano since the age of 5, which led him to also pursue a certification to become a Certified Music Practitioner through the Music for Healing & Transition Program (MHTP), serving individuals at their bedside through his Independent Practicum at Raj Soin Medical Center. With these studies, James intends to utilize Live Therapeutic Music for grounding and reflection in counseling sessions and contribute to the studies of utilizing Live Therapeutic Music in the behavioral health setting.

I can only get better when I accept myself as I am, where I have been and where I am going!!
One of my favorite mantras is "I can only get better when I accept myself as I am, where I have been, and where I am going!" I am passionate in my work. One of my main goals is to see you thrive. I want to aid you in your journey to better mental health. My therapeutic style is very laid back, and you will be the driving force in your treatment.
I look forward to working with a diverse population of clients! I am most passionate about working with neurodivergent individuals. I feel strongly about delivering neurodiversity affirming care to both adults and children who are affected by the difficulties of living in a world built for those who are 'typical'. Whether it is a specific instance or a lifelong series of being misunderstood, I see that those with ASD, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, bipolar, borderline, etc. carry trauma that I seek to work through alongside them. Additional areas of therapy that have my heart are familial and interpersonal relationship issues. Working with children brings me joy! I believe it is important to see a family as a whole when working through a child's challenges and understand how this translates into the lives of adults who grew up in unhappy homes.
